Recently DEI announced the swapping of the #15 and #8 crews, and Michael Waltrip said “I am happy with this decision. I feel we have a strong NAPA Team right now that will serve well for Dale Jr. next season. Obviously Tony Eury Jr. and the guys from the Bud car are some of the very best in the garage and I can’t wait to work with them. Ultimately this switch is to strengthen our effort as an entire team by using the very best resources from both sides. I know this switch will be talked about a lot in the days to come. I am just looking forward to Daytona testing in January when we can start to show everyone what a smart decision has been made.”

The 2004 NASCAR Nextel Cup Awards Ceremony went down on Friday night in New York, and some of the highlights include:
-Jeff Gordon taking the stage after being hospitalized with the flu, skipping the dinner and canceling his racing plans in France over the weekend.
-There was an amazing heart-felt speech by Mark Martin without the use of any notes or telepromter
-Dale Earnhardt Jr. was voted on by you the fan, as the most dramatic moment of 2004, his winning the opening race - The Daytona 500
-Randy Dorton was named Engine Builder of the Year which was accepted by his widow Diane. Randy was on the Hendrick Motorsports plane that crashed on October 24th.

Soon after the awards ceremony, Jimmie Johnson and Casey Mears jetted off to France to participate in the Race of Champions. Mears took the place of Jeff Gordon because he had experience in the event from last year, and also because Tony Stewart, Ryan Newman, and Kasey Kahne didn't have a passport. Unfortunately both Johnson and Mears lost early in the best of three leg heat races.
