Emphasis On Winning: Drivers Striving For Vital Bonus Points
All 12 drivers who qualify for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup will have their point total reset to 5,000. They then will have "bonus points" tacked on to that total – 10 points for each race victory preceding the Chase.
Kyle Busch – the current series point leader who obviously will make the Chase – already has 70 bonus points secured. The task at hand for other potential Chase qualifiers is to keep Busch from getting any more.
That's what Carl Edwards tried to do this past Sunday and he succeeded, winning at Pocono and upping his own bonus point total to 30. (Edwards would have 40, but his bonus points from a Las Vegas win were negated by a rule infraction.)
Five weeks to go pre-Chase means there are 50 more bonus points "out there."
Clearly, more than ever, drivers must strive to win races.
